3 Gamedev Ideas (December 16, 2019)

Hello,

Working on the game has been quite a struggle these last days.

I think that’s actually the biggest risk for our projects: simply losing interest and pursuing something shinier.

But I experienced that a bunch of times already. And I know it’ll get easier soon.

Anyway, let’s get into this week’s ideas!

3 Gamedev Ideas

I.

Here’s a coding tip that I use all the time: start from the end result, and code everything you need backwards.

This way you’re sure of which functions you actually need to create and you don’t waste any time.

II.

Don’t tackle too many challenges at once.

Say you have no experience in game development.

You don’t have an artistic background, you don’t know how to code and you never played an instrument in your life.

If start out by trying to create a MMORPG in a game engine you know nothing about…

You’ll almost certainly become overwhemed by the sheer amount of information you have to learn to keep moving forward.

Every time you start a new project, pick only one or two new things to learn.

III.

Addictiveness is created through balance.

You have to give rewards to the player at the right times in the right amount to keep him interested.

But give him too much and he’ll become desensitized.

Until next week,

Developer of Space Gladiators: Escaping Tartarus
